Active Social Networking Site Usage and its Effects on the Quality of Marital Lifeand Family Relationships among IT Professionals

Abstract


Social networking sites have a great impact on the current society and it has become part and parcel of people’s daily lives. Previous research stresses on how these social networking sites affect family relations in general. This paper specifically looks at usage patterns among active social networkers and its effects on the quality of their marital lives. The researchers adopt case study method to examine the nature of social networking sites’ usage among IT professionals in Kerala, India. To obtain a clear understanding, in-depth interviews are conducted and a thematic analysis is employed. The respondents are selected from married people of different compositions, who actively use one or more social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and WhatsApp groups. The study identifies similar patterns regarding frequency of usage, mode of access, and its influence on themselves and their family members. The paper also highlights the psychological effects of these social networking sites and how it impacts their relationships. The paper argues that active usage of social networking sites can negatively influence family relations and even lead to psychological disorders.
