Women's Role in Coastal Management - A case-study of Khejuri to Hijli Belt Through MGNREGA

Abstract


Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is a flagship programme of Govt. of India. The Act was Notified initially in two hundred most backward district of the countries w.e.f. February 2,2006 and Subsequently extended all over India in two phases.

          The programme aims at enhancing livelihood security of the rural poor by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. The Act seek to create durable assets and strengthen the likelihood resource base of the rural  poor. The choice of works suggested in the Act causes chronic poverty like deforestation, flood, soil erosion etc. so that the process of employment generation is on a sustainable basis. This study is proposed to examine wage on works focused on coastal erosion conservation, land development, nursery making etc to the field  mangrove plantation, drought proofing through afforestation.
